Chamber of Commerce Leadership Program Gives Back to Community

Build-A-Bike for Leadership TylerLeadership training programs sponsored by local Chambers of Commerce are very common, but programs that grow on their own, separate from the Chamber are much more rare. Leadership Tyler is one of the exceptions, because they offer a quality leadership program and often have a waiting list for months with people who are wanting to be the next alumni of the program. Early in the year, Leadership Tyler asked us to take part in one of their sessions by having all of the participants of the group conduct a Build-A-Bike® team building event for their group supporting the local Boys & Girls Club in the area building bikes for kids. This was a very fun, high energy group who are going to have a great time over the next six months in their program!

Below are a couple more photos from the event:

Fun, High Energy Group Building Bikes for Kids

Wright Express Holds Build-A-Bike in Boston, Massachusetts

Wright Express Build-A-BikeThe Wright Express Corporation chose to experience a Build-A-Bike® Team Building Workshop for the first time ever in their company’s history.  For an entire week, the Wright Express group called in their complete sales team from all over the U.S. as well as International representatives in order to communicate and share best practices within the group.  To kick-off the meeting, the planning committee called upon The Leader’s Institute® to execute a high energy, fun team building exercise.  The company headquarters are in New Hampshire, but the event took place in Downtown Boston at the Westin – Copley Place.  On a frigid day, the Wright Express Team reserved the entire meeting room floor of the Westin to accommodate the 160 people they had on hand.

With a rather sizable audience, the group was randomly broken up into 24 teams.  One of the activities which is part of the Build-A-Bike workshop is the Cheer Contest.  This is where the teams get their first assignment to collaborate within their groups and create a high energy presentation or cheer in front of the entire audience.  In one of the most comical displays, the groups one by one put together highly innovative and enthusiastic cheers.  Typically, teams do not root for each other, however, the Wright Express group were so invested in the success of the other teams that they started cheering for everyone who came up.  By the end of it, the deafening sound of cheers created an unforgettable moment for everyone in attendance.  This infectious energy level stayed amazingly high throughout the remainder of the workshop and the bikes were built in record time, with many of the faster teams assisting the slower teams once they were done.

In a fitting twist, this unique group donated the 24 bicycles the highly creative Communities Without Borders organization.  This organization works to support the education of 1,500 AIDS orphans in Zambia.  We found a unique opportunity to fill a need that we never knew existed.  When the children pass their exams and go on to secondary school, they often have to walk many miles to get to their school.  The donation of these bicycles was very much welcomed by the organization!  For the first time ever, the bicycles put together in a Build-A-Bike Workshop would be benefiting children outside of the U.S.  The donated children bikes will make school much more possible for these kids across the Atlantic Ocean.  This workshop was a prime example of how a Philanthropic Team Building Workshop manages to be a truly Win-Win-Win solution!

Prudential Financial makes a difference for local kids while team building in Newark, New Jersey with Build-A-Bike

Prudential Financial recently hosted a Build-A-Bike team building workshop in Newark, New Jersey to make a difference for local kids. For over 135 years, Prudential Financial has leveraged their life insurance and asset management expertise to help individual and institutional customers grow and protect wealth. They have more than 41,000 employees in 38 countries around the world. This particular group is part of a very fast growing team within the organization and wanted to do something fun, while getting to know each other better, working on communication, collaboration, leadership, and giving back to community. They chose Build-A-Bike as a way to help them meet those goals during a recent conference.

Build-A-Bike Team Building is a fun, high-energy, fast-paced series of activities designed to give the participants a chance to play together, while reinforcing important team building lessons and giving back to the community. The teams must work together to achieve success. Due to human nature, some participants are reluctant to cross team lines to collaborate, and it provides everyone with a great learning experience!

Prudential wanted to keep the impact of this event local, so they chose to partner with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Newark to donate the 20 bikes that they built. Representatives from the organization came and brought the children who were the lucky recipients of these bikes with them for a memorable moment. The children didn’t know why they were coming to the event until they walked through the doors, and the looks on their faces when they realized that they were all getting brand new bikes were priceless!

“Ellen and Craig did a fabulous job of pulling everything together for this event! It was all that we hoped it would be and so much more. And seeing the kids at the end – well, words just can’t describe it! Thank you so much!” — Holly Milewski, Prudential Financial

Including Build-A-Bike Team Building in your next conference in New York or New Jersey is a great way to help your team get to know each other better, reinforce the importance of collaboration and good communication, all while giving back to your community.
