On Sept. 1, Federal Express Corporation hosted a Build-A-Bike® team-building event in Memphis, Tennessee. 145 employees from several companies within the FedEx family, some local and some flown in, took part in the company’s FedEx Cares community service initiative. By the end of the afternoon, the group had built 18 bikes for local kids through School Seed Foundation.
Federal Express Corporation, known worldwide as FedEx, is a global logistics and delivery company headquartered in Memphis, Tennessee. They provide their customers worldwide shipping, transportation, and business services.
FedEx Teams Build Bikes for Memphis Kids Before a Multi-Day Meeting
Multiple companies within the FedEx family came together for the gathering. Some employees were local to Memphis, and others flew in for the multi-day meeting. FedEx runs a program called FedEx Cares that builds a community service component into events like this one. When deciding what to do for this year’s charity event, a high-up manager recalled having seen how well a Build-a-Bike® event was done eight years prior at a different company. This lasting impact ultimately decided this year’s cause.
Once the teams got moving, the competitive streak came out fast. Groups worked through the build challenges eager to finish first, cheering each other on as much as racing the clock. The energy carried the room right up until it was time for the big reveal. Unfortunately, the fire alarm went off just as everyone lined up for the group photo with the finished bikes. Instructor Kelsey Johnston ended up taking the celebration photo outside instead. The small hiccup did nothing to dampen the mood of a group that had just spent the afternoon building something real together to kick off their three-day meeting.
By the end of the event, the group had put together 18 bikes for School Seed Foundation. They are a Memphis nonprofit whose mission is to impact the lives of children and families through programs rooted directly in the community. This includes Bridge Up Giddy Up, Kindred Place, and a Youth Homelessness Demonstration Program. Charity representative Vince McCaskill was on hand to accept the bikes on behalf of local kids who will now have a way to get around their neighborhoods.
