Host Hotels & Resorts hosted a combo team-building event in Bethesda, MD. On Sept. 2, the company combined both a Creating a Team Culture and Build-A-Bike® event for their employees to increase their bond and give back to their community. 25 employees from across several different functions spent the morning working through trust and conflict resolution training. They then put the lessons into practice by building bikes that afternoon. By the end of the day, the group had donated 4 bikes to the YMCA of Maryland.

Host Hotels Team Turns Trust-Building Lessons Into an Afternoon Team-Building Event in Bethesda, MD
The event brought together a large team covering many different functions within the company, all working under one roof for the day. The morning’s Creating a Team Culture training focused on trust and conflict resolution. They focused on the kind of groundwork that determines whether a team can actually pull together when it matters. Our instructor worked through practical tools like the convo stack to show the group how to build authentic relationships with coworkers they don’t always interact with day-to-day. They also walked through how each team member’s individual temperament adds something different to what the group can produce together.
After lunch, the Build-A-Bike® portion gave the group a hands-on way to put the morning’s lessons straight into practice. Rather than treating the activity as a separate event, it became a real test of the trust and communication skills the team had just spent the morning building. The same dynamics that make conflict resolution work in a meeting room show up just as clearly when a team is racing to get a bike frame together correctly. By the end of the afternoon, the group had assembled four bikes.
The four bikes went to the YMCA of Maryland. An organization that works to strengthen communities through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility programs for people across the region. Tracy Miller, Vice President of Operations, accepted the bikes on behalf of the kids who will receive them.
