The Build-A-Bike® event gathered employees from Albemarle’s Research & Technology and Community Affairs teams. Participants represented diverse roles, including chemists, engineers, technicians, safety professionals, and community relations leaders. Many team members also brought international backgrounds, making inclusivity and clarity essential throughout the experience. This diversity reflected Albemarle’s commitment to cross-functional collaboration.

Participants were divided into eight teams to encourage new connections and shared problem-solving. The event emphasized trust, psychological safety, and morale rather than competition alone. Clear instructions, structured challenges, and a judging component kept the experience engaging and accessible. The room quickly filled with energy, curiosity, and strong peer support.

Hosting the event at the Kings Mountain YMCA reinforced Albemarle’s connection to the local community. The on-site partnership aligned the activity with the YMCA’s mission of youth development and wellness. Although children were not present, the purpose behind the work remained central throughout the event. Teams stayed focused on the impact their efforts would create beyond the organization.

By the end of the experience, participants felt energized and connected. Employees collaborated across departments and stepped outside their usual work environment.
