Vertex Engineering gathered for a Build-A-Bike® charity team building activity in Oxon Hill, MD. The event took place at MGM National Harbor as part of a New Employee Welcome experience designed to help coworkers build stronger relationships from day one. Sixty-five participants arrived ready to connect, collaborate, and support the local community through a shared goal. By the end of the event, the group successfully transformed from strangers into teammates while assembling bicycles for the The Y of Maryland.

Vertex Engineering Employees Connect Through Build-A-Bike® Team Building Activity in Oxon Hill, Maryland
The Build-A-Bike® event created the perfect environment for new employees to break the ice and build relationships quickly. Teams worked through challenges together while assembling bicycles under time pressure, which encouraged communication and collaboration from the start. The room stayed energetic throughout the activity as participants supported one another and celebrated small victories along the way. Since the event focused on helping employees arrive as strangers and leave as friends, the interactive format naturally helped people open up and connect.
The activity also reflected many of Vertex’s core values. Team members balanced urgency with teamwork while combining problem-solving skills with creativity and communication. Employees from different backgrounds worked side-by-side toward a meaningful outcome, reinforcing the company’s emphasis on both professional excellence and community impact. As the competition unfolded, the atmosphere remained upbeat, collaborative, and focused on building genuine connections among the new hires.
The charity presentation added even more meaning to the experience. Erica and another representative from the The Y of Maryland arrived early and thanked the participants for their support. Their brief presentation helped connect the group to the families and children who will benefit from the donated bicycles. The completed bikes will help provide recreation, transportation, and memorable experiences for local youth throughout the community.
