Nationwide Insurance Build-A-Bike in Columbus, Ohio

Nationwide Insurance included a Build-A-Bike team building event in their recent conference in Columbus, Ohio. The conference was a Leadership Summit and the 80 participants had spent the day leading up to the Build-A-Bike workshop in intense sessions. They were ready for an interactive exercise where they could move around and have some fun! Over the last 80 years, Nationwide has grown from a small mutual auto insurer owned by policyholders to one of the largest insurance and financial services companies in the world, with more than $135 billion in statutory assets. Columbus has been home to Nationwide from the beginning. Their corporate headquarters houses 10,000 associates in various fields of expertise.

Build-A-Bike is a high-energy activity that uses a series of activities and exercises to get people to interact, play and compete with each other. Each exercise builds on the previous one, and teams get some gentle reminders of the importance of cheering each other’s successes, sharing information and materials, and communicating clearly. The Nationwide team was a very energetic and creative group! They met all of the challenges with enthusiasm and played hard. Once it became clear that working together was the way to be successful, they jumped right in and helped each other out without hesitation.

They donated the 12 bikes built in the event to a local Boys and Girls Club in Columbus. The participants had no idea that the kids were going to come to the event! The workshop’s meaning was made even stronger for the participants when the kids walked through the doors.

“Ellen had so much energy in her facilitation! The activity was exactly what the group needed. Everyone had a great time!” — Stacy Moeller, Nationwide

Teams that play together often work harder and more effectively together. Consider including a Build-a-Bike team building workshop in your next conference as a great way to give your team that opportunity. It will create a memorable and meaningful experience for everyone.

Mettler Toledo Ace Race in Columbus, Ohio

Mettler Toledo recently included an Ace Race team building workshop in an off-site meeting in Columbus, Ohio. The group that gathered for a four-day conference came from around the globe. They wanted to have an afternoon of team building and having fun together, while giving back to the local community.

The Ace Race began with a couple of quick warm-up activities that get at some of the fundamentals of good team communication. The group shared some laughs and the competitive spirit was high! Moving into the Ace Race itself, each team created a mini putting green for themselves using non-perishable goods. Each green had a unique design and some included very tricky obstacles! All of the teams then had a race to see which team could get around the entire course first, making a hole-in-one on each green.

This group started out a little low-key, but very competitive! There was a lot of laughter and cheering as they created and then played their course. One of the teams made the mistake of making their hole so difficult that even THEY couldn’t get past it for a long time! At the end of the event, they invited the Mid-Ohio Food Bank to accept their donation of 321 lbs of non-perishable food goods! A representative from the organization came and talked to the group about the impact of their donation to the local community.

“This is a competitive group, and a mini-golf event was perfect for them! It was a nice break from the rest of our meetings.” —Natasya Di Russo, Mettler Toledo

Team building workshops that are composed of activities that have a point, coupled with a lot of fun and the opportunity to give back to the community are a great way to get people having fun together. Consider including an Ace Race in your next conference and give your team a memorable experience!

Nationwide Build-A-Bike Team Building Event in Columbus, Ohio

Over 120 Actuaries and mangers from Nationwide Investments came together in Columbus, Ohio, for a Build-A-Bike Team Building Event. The venue was Camp Mary Orton and provided a wonderful place for the activities. The activity room was set up with tables and materials for the event and everyone had a great time of fun and learning as they completed tasks that resulted in 20 bikes being built and donated to the Godman Guild that will give the bikes to excited children from their network. It was a fast-paced, fun and entertaining time with lots of laughter, a lot of networking and a lot of good cheer. The participants enjoyed the afternoon with each other, the activities and the good feeling of giving back to the Columbus community.

Often times team building events are used to teach lessons amidst the activities. The activities are designed with subtle and not so subtle elements that reinforce team building, bonding and leadership. But sometimes team building can just be getting to know each other and having fun together. The Build-A-Bike Team Building Event for Nationwide was such an event. The focus was on getting out of the office, meeting others from around the area, getting acquainted and getting to know each other better; all in the surrounds of a great camp and entertainment. In this case the team building was almost covert, but the building of the relationships, seeing each other in a little different than ordinary circumstances; laughing together, enjoying each other and the activities all added to a great experience. Enjoyment was the top theme, but even if by accident, learning was taking place.

Thanks to Nationwide and their great team for a great team building event in Columbus, Ohio, and a thanks also to Camp Mary Orton for a great venue and to the Godman Guild for providing children to receive the bikes.
